Gesualdo’s Tenebrae factae sunt is a responsory for Good Friday, describing how darkness fell when Jesus was crucified. It was intended to be sung at a Tenebrae service, during the hours of darkness. The composer’s chromatic style is particularly successful at wringing the emotions here. This, like Woefully arrayed, is a concert recording from 1998.
